BUDGET CUT NEWS FOR
2010-2011
revised
03/08/2010
- ATTEND
the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, March 11. 7:00pm.
Science and Technology Center at the high school.
- Adopted layoff resolution: Click to see the
resolution adopted by the Board of Education on Feb. 25:
LayoffResolution100225.pdf.
This resolution authorizes the administration to involuntarily reduce a
maximum of nine BHEA certificated unit member positions through the layoff
process.
- Spending cut resolution:
On March 2, the Board adopted a resolution to reduce spending
by 4% in the category of services and other operating expenses. BHEA
calculates that this will save the district about $300,000 in 2010-2011.

- BHEA's non-member-layoff budget
options with rationale: Click to see BHEA's proposal of
budget-cutting options that we presented to the Board on Feb. 25:
BudgetCutsWorksheet100225.pdf. We've updated our proposal to
include rationale. BHEA will continue to communicate our perspective
of the district budget, present viable alternatives to layoffs, and work
toward convincing the Board of Education to eliminate all layoffs of our
members.
- Current budget situation heading
into 2010-2011: The administration believes it needs
to close a budget deficit of approximately $1.3 million for the 2010-2011
school year. So far, the district has agreed to lower the 2010-2011
reserve to 3%, reduce the size of the administration, and move toward
reducing non-personnel spending by 4%. Unfortunately, the district has
also authorized up to nine teacher layoffs.
- BHEA's continued vigilance: BHEA will continue to educate and
offer options to the Board that do not include laying off our members.
If the district formally enters into the layoff procedure, BHEA and CTA will
be at each affected member's side to give them a vigorous defense throughout
the legal proceedings.
